Clean Rooms and Sterile Rooms: Ready to Raise the Level of Safety in Every Space

A sterile room, or clean room, refers to a room with a rigorously engineered cleanliness and air-circulation system, in which airborne matter and pollutants are controlled and kept to an absolute minimum. This keeps the room clean to Ministry of Public Health standards and suits the specific use of each facility, for example filtering out airborne contaminants and controlling temperature, humidity, and pressure differentials as required, so that operations run smoothly and the risk of errors is reduced.

When it comes to clean-room systems built to internationally recognised standards, Sanyawit takes the cleanliness of every facility seriously. Drawing on our experience designing and installing clean rooms and sterile rooms for hundreds of rooms across leading hospitals and healthcare facilities, we are ready to raise the level of safety in every space with high-quality air-filtration systems that thoroughly control airborne pollutants and contaminants, creating sterile rooms that meet Ministry of Public Health standards.

For anyone who would like to learn more about sterile rooms, including how to control and maintain their standards, Sanyawit has gathered a wealth of useful information for you in this article. Let's explore it together!

Types of Clean Room, Classified by Airflow Pattern

  • Conventional Clean Room
In this type of room, the air circulates in much the same way as an ordinary air-conditioning system, but it uses a HEPA Filter and a higher air-change rate to reduce contamination inside the room. A clean room of this kind achieves a cleanliness level of roughly Class 1,000–10,000.
    Horizontal Laminar Clean Room
In this type of room, air at a constant velocity flows through a HEPA Filter installed across one entire wall of the room, passes through the clean room, and is then drawn back up to the ceiling and returned to the air handler. This type of room achieves a cleanliness level of roughly Class 100 and is popular for biological laboratories, for example.
    Vertical Laminar Flow Clean Room
In this type of room, the HEPA Filter is installed across the entire ceiling. Air is delivered downward from the ceiling through the HEPA filter in a vertical direction, and the airflow returns through the floor, which is made open, then back to the cooling air handler. It achieves a cleanliness level of roughly Class 100 and is well suited to the electronics industry and various factories.
Now that we know the types of sterile room and clean room, let's look at how to control the standards of a given sterile room so that it can be used sustainably and at full efficiency.

How to Control and Maintain Sterile-Room Standards

Preventing particles or contaminants from entering the room

A HEPA Filter should be used to filter the air entering the room in order to keep the room pressure higher than outside (positive pressure), and personnel should clean themselves with an air shower (Air Washer) before entering the room.

Preventing the generation of contaminants

Inside the facility, everyone should wear special garments designed specifically for germ-controlled rooms. Work must be carried out carefully and meticulously, and the materials used in the room must not generate contamination.

Preventing the accumulation of dust on the walls

Cleaning of the room must follow the prescribed standards. The room walls must be easy to clean and must not allow dust to accumulate.

Discharging particles or contaminants out of the room

A portion of the air should be circulated out to the exterior to reduce contaminants generated within. Tightly sealed enclosures should be provided, or point-source extraction should draw air away at locations where particles that cause contamination are produced.
